Crazy For You (UK Touring)
In the words of the song 'nice work if you can get it' and anything from George & Ira Gershwin probably fits neatly into that category and this little gem started life as 'Girl Crazy' back in the 1930s but, was revitalised with a new plot for a more modern audience, opening on Broadway in 1992.
Current touring production has a Strictly Come Dancing flavour starring Tom Chambers as Bobby Child a whirling dervish of speech, song and dance, Caroline Flack oozing sexuality as fiance Irene Roth and the enchanting all round performance of Charlotte Wakefield as the hotly pursued yet hard to get Polly Baker.
Bobby sent from New York to foreclose on a rundown theatre in Deadrock, Nevada by his domineering mother (played perfectly by Kate Milner-Evans) immediately falls for Polly the only female in this one woman town. In order to win the girl he comes up with the idea of putting on a show to pay off the mortgage, unfortunately Polly realises why he has originally come and senses a trick so the relationship is doomed before it starts not helped by Lank Hawkins (nicely portrayed by Christopher Fry), rival for the attention of Polly.
Bobby decides to the put the show on anyway and disguised as Bela Zangler (played with great comic aplomb by Matthew James Hinchliffe) impresario of the Zangler Follies and with the assistance of the Follies Girls pulls together a show but, is unable to attract an audience in this western outpost and appears to have failed.
In a strange quirk of fate, Polly falls for Bobby but, only in his disguised state as Zangler, at which point the real Zangler arrives in town chasing one of the Follies Girls he has fallen for followed by Irene trying to reclaim her fiance. In a finely timed tirade of mistaken identity, Bobby returns to New York thinking he has lost his love, both Bobby and Polly realise they are really meant to be and set off to find each other, fortunately whilst it appears they will cross in transit, due to a car that has run out of gas they are finally reunited in Deadrock and love triumphs as it always should.
Sprinkle in some classic tunes from the Gershwin Brother like 'Someone To Watch Over Me', 'Embraceable You' and 'I Got Rhythm' and you have a show that has something to appeal to everybody. Performed by a cast that are not only actors, singers, dancers but, musicians as well with talent in abundance, finely directed by Paul Hart and choreographed by Nathan M Wright.
Crazy For You is one of the classics of musical theatre and it will leave you with a warm, joyful feeling, humming all of the numbers that we know so well. Touring until 19th May 2018 there is no excuse not to catch a performance somewhere so book your tickets now.
