Mamma Mia ! (UK Touring)

We are all probably at the point of thinking has there ever been a point without a musical based on the songs of Abba and it is almost twenty years since the debut in the West End of this show which brought the music of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus to the theatre stage, since than it has been an ever-present in London, appeared in theatres across the world, spawned a movie (with a second on the way) and is currently touring the UK provinces.

At this performance the pivotal role of Donna Sheridan was taken with some gusto by Kay Milbourne delivering with a great voice and stunning characterisation, joined by Gillian Hardie as a genuinely amusing yet touching Rosie and Emma Clifford as 'man eater' Tanya (the 'Does Your Mother Know' scene is a brilliant piece of musical theatre).

Lack of knowledge as to the exact identity of her father has driven Donna's daughter Sophie to invite all three possibilities to her wedding, a sophisticated performance as Sam Carmichael by Jon Boydon, light-hearted comedic portrayal of Harry Bright by Jamie Hogarth and entertaining earthiness from Chris Hollis as Bill Austin (another show highlight is the 'Take A Chance On Me' scene between Bill and Rosie).

Together these two trios deliver a highly integrated level of storytelling of some complex relationships mixing both touching pathos and distracting entertainment into a completely engaging theatrical journey.

Daughter Sophie Sheridan played with poignancy at this performance by Blaise Colangelo and complemented nicely by Fia Houston-Hamilton and Erice-Jayne Alden as friends/prospective bridesmaids Ali and Lisa respectively. Love interest Sky played by Phillip Ryan elicited some intense reaction from the female portion of the audience and his friends Pepper, a spectacular performance from Louis Stockil and Eddie performed by Brad Veitch adding some intensely funny comic moments.

All in all this is a production that allows you to lose yourself in the story and the music for an hour or two and with such a talented cast across the board (not just those directly mentioned in this review) that story is told in the most engaging of ways, so catch it while you can, it’s touring until 14th July 2018.
