Thoroughly Modern Millie (Kidderminster Operatic and Dramatic Society)

Settle down at the Rose Theatre, Kidderminster lately and you’d be forgiven for thinking that you had slipped back to the flapper era of the 1920s. In actual fact you have as you enjoy the sparkling production of Thoroughly Modern Millie brought to the stage by Kidderminster Operatic and Dramatic Society.

Director Pat Scully has moulded a high class performance from a cast of undoubtedly inspiring local talent, add some prominent choreography from Hannah Kearns and some interpretive musical orchestration from Chris Passey and you have all that's required to completely entertain an audience for some two hours or more, taking them back to a day when life was certainly less complex than today.

Leading the cast in the role of Millie Dillmount is Attiye Partridge, it's hard to tell if the role is just perfect for her or if she is perfect for the role but, whichever the case it's a piece of exquisite theatrical performance in every way and only a shame that the impending professional tour will not benefit from her presence.

Emily Preece's performance as Miss Dorothy Brown is as spotless as the character herself (you can almost see a bit of Mary Tyler Moore who played the role in the 1967 Movie), Ryan Donnell is an engaging and lovable Jimmy Smith which contrasts nicely with the exaggerated 'dominant male' in Tom Paine's performance as Trevor Graydon.

Comedy and a vein of hidden jealousy are more than apparent in a deliciously double-edged performance from Jill Parmenter as Mrs Meers who is joined in an undercurrent of intrigue by her Chinese compatriots Bun Foo and Ching Ho, played with aplomb by Chris Paine and Tom Farley respectively.

In what is a story of many changing relationships the final plot complexities are revealed by Muzzy Van Hossmere, a bijou performance from Salli Hunt and ultimately the right people are paired-off for what we can only believe will be a future of 'happy ever after'.

In the words of the song (probably my favourite from the show), 'forget about the boy', the girl or anybody else who might distract you from picking-up a remaining ticket for this all round fun piece of theatre which runs until 17th March 2018.
