All Shook Up - Carpet Trades Musical Theatre Company

This review is dedicated to the entertainment phenomenon that was Mitchell Bastable who would have appeared in this production were he not taken from all those that knew and loved him way before his time. Always remembered, never forgotten, hoping you're up there looking down and still enjoying music and musical theatre as much as you ever did Mitch.

As the words of the song go 'c'mon everybody take a real deep breath' and see if you can follow the multitudinous storylines in this musical, full of classic tracks from Elvis Presley woven into a tale loosely based on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night by Joe DiPietro.

It's all credit to the direction of Doug Forrester and a talented cast that it isn't too difficult to follow the heavily interlinked relationship dramas that unfold, add to this some expressive choreography from Lucy Webb and Russell Painter's interpretation of songs that are well known to pretty much all of us and you have a night of engaging entertainment that will have you digging-out some of your more mature record collection for a continued trip down memory lane once you're back home.

So who will rebel roustabout Chad pursue as his love interest ? This lead character is played in a very cool style but, with a deeply rooted comic undertone by Chris Yates.

It appears probably the beautiful and intellectual Miss Sandra, caretaker of the local museum and played beautifully by Helen White or young 'tomboy' mechanic Natalie a strong performance with a booming vocal from Ellisha Green, strangely it could be the pseudo-macho Ed, alter ego of Natalie as she trys to attract Chad with manly banter.

Will geeky Dennis, a reserved yet compelling character portrayal by Joshua Haywood not only achieve the role of sidekick to Chad but, also the love of Natalie, or will he by a quirk of fate finally find himself with Miss Sandra. Will Natalie's father Jim, a convincing and likeable performance from Darren Richards, also smitten by the vampish Miss Sandra, really build the relationship he wants with bar owner Sylvia (a soulful and endearing performance by Zoe Darks) ?

Will Sandra's daughter, Lorraine an accomplished singing and acting performance from Jessica Richards, manage to marry her love Dean, played with assurance and charm by Alex Thompson or will his domineering mother Matilda, portrayed with just the right venom by Melanie Greenfield and her 'under the thumb’ Sheriff, played with great comic timing by John Watkins, get to him first ?

All these questions are answered and all these story’s are played out to completion for the entertainment of an appreciative audience by not only the aforementioned principal players but, an ensemble cast that adds greatly to the overall performance.

You’re going to have to be quick to get to see Carpet Trades MTC perform this one as the run ends on Saturday 20th October but, it will be well worth your time and money.
