Me and My Girl (Prince Henry's High School, Evesham)

When it comes to reviewing youth productions I am always expecting a smattering of talent on stage, however of late the depth of such talent is increasing at an alarming rate and this production by Prince Henry's High School in Evesham is no exception. Have to say I'm glad I wasn't involved in the casting as it must have been extremely difficult with only a relatively small principal cast and quite obviously more than enough individuals vying for those roles.

Said principal cast are it's fair to say exceptional in so many ways, if it isn't some mesmerising characterisation from Alexander Gough as The Hon Gerald Bolingbroke, it's the forthright acting talent of Cameron Muir as Sir John Tremayne (if not so young I'd believe the scenes of drunkenness were from personal experience), Olivia O'Sullivan as the matriarchal Maria, Duchess of Dene and Toby Haycock as Charles the Butler.

Looking for some comedy, look no further than Thomas Lacey's wheelchair-bound Sir Jasper Tring and Benjamin Hughes for not only the laughs but, a melodic singing voice as the 'Family Solicitor' Herbert Parchester.

However for all round talent it's impossible not to notice Amy Goodwin's perfect portrayal of the vampish Lady Jaqueline Carstone, acting, singing, dancing is there no end to the talents of this young lady ?

It's a credit to the supporting principals that it has taken this long into the review to mention Liam Clear as Bill Snibson and Melissa Radley as Sally Smith, both worthy leads and probably a couple of individuals that could hold their own on a West End Stage, in particular Melissa's rendition of 'Take It On the Chin' is a highlight not to be missed.

There is an extensive supporting cast including a well choreographed team of dancers, sadly far too many to mention by name but, suffice to say they all add something to the overall success of this performance. Watch out for a couple of delightful little cameos with Lucy Trevorrow as the sassy Mrs Brown and Jacob Jeffries as a helpful and enthused Police Constable.

Even with a great venue (Evesham Arts Centre), a stunning set and a totally engaged group of performers it takes a dynamic management team consisting of Mrs Maxine Cook, Mr Phill Bullas and Mr Lee Fisher to bring everything together for the enjoyment of an enthusiastic audience.

Me and My Girl only runs until Saturday 9th August so you've only get very few opportunities to see a top piece of musical theatre before it finishes.
