Spamalot (Studley Operatic Society)

If there was a Top 10 List of off the wall musicals, the Monty Python inspired Spamalot might very well be at the top of that list, in many ways irreverent but, with huge comic appeal it has something that just makes an audience laugh and some terribly catchy tunes as well.

Studley Operatic Society under the direction of Kevin and Alison Hirons manage to milk every last drop of fun and frivolity from the words penned by Eric Idle with the addition of some stylish choreography from Donna Rhodes that I am sure might enhance even professional productions of this show.

Matthew Bridgewater is a stoic King Arthur regularly confused and amazed by the antics of the rather strange gathering he has managed to assemble as his 'Knights of the Round Table', be that Steve Hyde's spirited Sir Lancelot, Paul Mitchell Jr's rather self obsessed Sir Galahad, Jeremy Dobbins as maker of the 'large wooden rabbit' (a rather failed Trojan Horse), Sir Bedevere or Michael Bentley's now incomparable Sir Robin.

Craig Robert McDowall provides a feisty performance as Patsy (put upon manservant to King Arthur) and delivers a powerful rendition of the iconic 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' and Beth Garden is ideally cast as the beauteous 'Lady of the Lake' belting out with great power and clarity her musical numbers including a showstopping performance of 'The Diva's Lament'.

This is one of those productions with more than its fair share of cameo/character roles allocated regularly in multiples to each actor with some notable performances from Steve Hyde as The French Taunter, Dylan Faulkner as both Not Dead Fred and Prince Herbert and Paul Mitchell Jr as the limbless Black Knight. Completing the principal roles are Liz Bird as the Historian (telling the audience all about England NOT Finland) and Paul Mitchell Sr as Tim the Enchanter.

There is also an extensive supporting cast who could easily crowd the relatively small stage at the Palace Theatre, Redditch but, all add value to the scenes they are part of, not least of all a team of talented dancers (Alison Hirons, Debbie Mitchell, Grace Kemp, Lisa Smith, Sophie Hill and Yasmin Springthorpe).

Running until Saturday 4th May 2019, you will want to make sure you 'Find Your Grail' as a member of the audience of at least one performance I'm sure.
