The Sound Of Music (TADLOP)

Currently a highly popular choice with societies in the Midlands, the Rodgers & Hammerstein standard ‘The Sound Of Music’ is the current production for TADLOP (Telford And District Light Operatic Players) at The Place in Oakengates. Fiona Hunter as Director uses the full extent of the venue to provide an immersive experience for the audience with the aisles of the auditorium occupied on a regular basis with anything from Nuns to Nazi Soldiers and this adds to the atmosphere and supplements a relatively light touch set using a video wall to provide the core of the background.

Adele Clarkson literally owns the stage as Maria, a performance and voice of stratospheric proportions that is the glue which holds this production together alongside the imposing figure of Adam Wheeler as Captain Von Trapp, a measured and definitive performance of a character trying desperately to hide his emotions.

Team ‘Re’ rather than ‘Do’ or ‘Mi’ are the Von Trapp Children for this performance and are typically well drilled, not only for marching but, for creating that audience bond that is always a little more engaging than the adults in the cast. Inara Grimley-Hiller probably wins the award for the biggest ‘ah’ factor as youngest daughter Gretl, particularly during the ‘So Long, Farewell’ number but, the whole team Alex Venezia (Friedrich), Natasha Parker (Louisa), Harry-Frederick Hindley (Kurt), Calen Mei Plummer (Brigitta) and Amelia Grimley-Hiller (Marta) create an enchanting spectacle whenever they are on stage.

Another outstanding voice and performance comes from Charlotte Lampitt as eldest daughter Liesl struggling with the challenges of her first relationship and no longer wanting to be seen as a child, the ‘Sixteen, Going On Seventeen’ number opposite Reiss McSporran as Rolf Gruber is a particular highlight including some inventive choreography from Debbie Owen.

Daniel ‘Deej’ Hiller delivers an energetic and extremely entertaining portrayal of Max Detweiller and Vanessa Holt is a classy Elsa Schraeder almost achieving the Captain despite everybody wanting the relationship to fail in favour of him marrying Maria.

It’s almost impossible to review ‘The Sound Of Music’ without focusing at some point on Maria’s anticipated life as a nun and the advice she eventually takes from the Mother Abbess (a powerful performance from Rachel Cuthbert) and her senior advisors Sister Margaretta (Caroline Slack), Sister Berthe (Lisa Adams) and Sister Sophia (Helen Madden), it is there bar for the production with the ‘How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria ?’ number and the preceding Latin chanting, they do so at a very high level and the rest of the cast accept that challenge.

Some cameo performances to watch out for, Rich Kee as Von Trapp’s butler Franz, Clair Chalkley as housekeeper Frau Schmidt and Luke Drew as a commanding Gauleiter, Herr Zeller to name but, a few from the ensemble cast.

Running until Saturday October 26th, 2019 don’t miss out on one of the classics of Musical Theatre as if you see this one you’ll definitely have ‘done something good’.
