Legally Blonde (UK Touring)

It's interesting how the fundamental premise of a musical can be predominantly how misunderstood and undervalued 'blondes' are and of even greater interest how successful and popular that particular piece of musical theatre can be.

Legally Blonde the Musical is based on the novel of the same name by Amanda Brown and tells how sorority girl Elle Woods manages to enrol into Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III and strangely finds that her unorthodox approach to legal process can actually benefit her career and win her friends who initially see her as somewhat of a joke.

Lucie Jones much in demand as a leading performer after spells in Rent, The Wedding Singer and a previous run of Legally Blonde at Leicester Curve takes the role of little Miss Woods, Elle and with her magnificent stage presence and undoubtedly powerful voice an ideal choice she is to take the role.

Adding comedy value and perhaps an unrecognised singing prowess as proprietor of the Hair Affair salon, Paulette, is star of Eastenders, the delightful Rita Simons doing an amazing job at this performance of controlling the amorous advances of a bulldog playing the role of Rufus.

Bill Ward another stalwart of the television soap opera is commanding if not uncomfortably scary at times as law course tutor Professor Callahan and David Barrett adds empathy and sheer likability as love interest Emmet, personally I'm a big fan of 'ratty corduroy' as well as 'legally blonde', together David and Lucie make a believable couple flung together more by chance than fate.

Rebecca Stenhouse, Rachel Grundy and Delycia Belgrave are lustily energetic as Margot, Serena and Pilar the Girls form Delta Nu, Liam Doyle exudes good looks and charm as Warner and Nancy Hill believability as driven, independent lesbian Enid.

Playing numerous roles all with impeccable comic timing Mark Peachey certainly deserves a mention, his cameo as Winthrop (Harvard Law Admissions Officer) was sublimely funny. Laura Harrison as Vivienne, feisty, occasionally cruel but, ultimately won over by Elle despite initially claiming Warner as hers is also exceptional value in her role.

An old adage of the theatre is certainly true here 'never act with children or animals' as the show is well and truly stolen by insanely cute chihuahua Bruisey William-Dodd as Elle's family member Bruiser.

In the words of the song 'what you want, you wanna be' making sure you catch this show at some point during the tour which runs until 30th June 2018.
