Our House (UK Touring)

Music and lyrics from those lovable lads from Camden Town, Madness are at the heart of this musical which I guess could easily be branded as a Jukebox Musical but, is so much more than that with a touching and engaging storyline that draws the audience in and asks them to make a decision between wrong and right.

Story revolves around the central character of Joe Casey, played with energetic exuberance by Jason Kajdi who with his girlfriend Sarah (a powerfully voiced performance from Sophie Matthew) breaks into a building on Camden Lock. As the police arrive he has to make choice, hand himself in, or take flight and try to escape without taking responsibility for his crime.

At this point the story splits and we see how things might have been from both angles overseen by Joe's now dead father (played with great emotion by Callum McArdle). Will he take the honest path no matter how painful that may be for him or will he try to deceive the system and hope he isn't found out.

Both stories run in parallel with the lead actor seamlessly transforming from Good Joe to Bad Joe and back again with the assistance of other cast members and some imaginative stage direction from Director, James Tobias.

Acting as the devil on one shoulder is dance maestro George Sampson as hard man Reecey (breaking some incredibly athletic moves as part of the finale) and as the angel(s) on the other shoulder are mates Emmo and Lewis, played with much entertaining appeal by Billy Roberts and Will Haswell respectively, many a wry smile and laugh provoked by this pair of talented performers.

As the story progresses it appears the Bad Joe will get the girl, the job, the success and ultimately prevail but, as we reach the climax he fails at the last moment in an attempt to evict his own mother, Kath (played by star of Emmerdale, Deena Payne) from her house in the aptly named Casey Street it appears she has perished and Bad Joe is now revealed for the person he really is.

With the audience now completely hooked, the Good Joe story ends with Kath returning to find her house on fire only to be reunited with her lost son and a triumph for honesty over adversity.

Rarely does a musical have such an enthralling storyline and popular tunes and lyrics that stand the test of time and thoroughly entertain an audience. There is a moral to this story and it can be summed-up in some lyrics from the recurring song 'Simple Equation' and that is 'cause with no love there is no high, if nothing falls there'd be no sky'.

Grab your chance to see this one while you can as the tour finishes 25th November 2017 so there aren't many performances left.
