101 Dalmatians (Birmingham Rep)

You might be disappointed if you were to attend this production and expect to see that number of spotty, furry canines on stage but, that disappointment would soon fade with the class puppetry, acting and musicianship of a multitalented cast.

In the ever increasing vein of the hit production of ‘War Horse’ this is a feat of entertainment that amazes as well as delights, charms and beguiles the audience from beginning to end.

From the moment we meet the enticingly normal Mr & Mrs Dearly (Morgan Philpott and Nadi Kemp-Sayfi) with their physically canine pets Pongo & Missis (controlled flawlessly by Oliver Wellington and Emma Thornett) you just know this will be a memorable experience.

Having given birth to a large litter of puppies, they are stolen by Jasper & Saul Baddun (comical names and finely tuned comic acting from Lewis Griffin and Luke Murphy), henchmen of the deliciously bad, yet fundamentally fragile Cruella de Vil (a portrayal of domineering vulnerablity from Gloria Onitiri).

It appears that some ninety eight of the little, spotted beauties are required to make Cruella the coat she continuely whines at her long suffering husband Horace for (Jo Servi defining hen-pecked completely). Hence the arrival of Perdita (further puppetry excellence from Lakesha Cammock) another Dalmatian, long been searching for her even larger brood who have also been taken by the Baddun Brothers under the influence of Mr & Mrs de Vil.

In the ensuing scenes of exquisitely directed movement by Tessa Walker and Lucy Cullingford an array of puppet dogs and a cat (a different requirement but, with equal skill from Mei Mac) track down and rescue the pups, including a genius scene in which the Baddun Brothers are totally outwitted by their animal captives.

Take everything that this production offers, acting, puppetry, music, song and you have a piece of majestic family viewing that runs until 13th January 2018 so don’t let that date pass without grabbing some tickets.
