Flashdance (UK Touring)

If you’ve ever seen the movie of Singin’ in the Rain you may remember that Cosmo Brown calls Lina Lamont a ‘triple threat’, she can’t act, she can’t sing and she can’t dance. Joanne Clifton is actually the polar opposite of this, she can do all three and do them well, she’s also easy on the eye and has uncanny knack of being able to connect with an audience whilst still keeping the integrity of a character, a rare commodity.

This is obviously the latest stage adaption of the 1983 movie and is a montage of stories headed by that of Alex Owens (Joanne Clifton), worker in a steel mill during the day, yet pursuing her dream of being a dancer at night. Sadly in a less than salubrious location and a far cry from the dance conservatory that she aspires to but, fortunately with support from (and a romantic relationship with) her privileged boss Nick Hurley, an engaging portrayal by Ben Adams proving there is much more than Boy Band to his performance capacity and her mentor ex ballerina Hannah, a joyful supporting performance from Carol Ball, her ambition is finally achieved although not without an array of challenges.

Along the way Alex is pursued by strip-club owner CC, a devilish performance from Matt Concannon, to dance at his establishment but, resists to the detriment of her friend another dancer Gloria, desperate to succeed and easily exploited by CC, played with controlled confidence and an awesome voice by Hollie-Ann Lowe.

Closing the loop is Jimmy, somewhat failed comedian but, with plenty of enthusiasm (an exemplary performance by Colin Kiyani), boyfriend to Gloria and nephew to Harry (a great piece of emotional, comic acting by Garry Lee Netley at this performance) who runs the club that Alex dances in.

Not to disappoint, the iconic ‘water scene’ and musical numbers like ‘What a Feeling’, ‘Maniac’, ‘Gloria’ and ‘I Love Rock and Roll’ are all there and are part of what makes the story draw in the audience, that and the sheer tenacity of the leading characters to achieve what they want despite the difficulties they are faced with.

Some powerful direction and choreography by Hannah Chiswick and Matt Cole respectively along with an all round accomplished on and off stage team brings together a piece of highly captivating musical theatre.

Currently touring until 25th August 2018, you’ll not want to miss that ‘feeling’ so get your tickets and become part of the experience.
