20th Century Boy (UK Touring)
The tragically short life of glam rock star Marc Bolan is the subject of this intense and dramatic piece of theatre, brought to the stage by the directorial hands of Gary Lloyd, a not inconsiderable task considering what an important part both Bolan and T-Rex play in the history of British Popular Music.
George Maguire assumes the mantle of Marc Bolan, once quoted as being ‘the last of the great pop stars’ after originating the role of Dave Davies from The Kinks in ‘Sunny Afternoon’ and it’s easy to see why he is sought after to play rock stars, I imagine if he wasn’t playing them, he would be one himself as he has all the attributes.
Filling what can only be described as considerable gaps in the life of Bolan was June Child who became his wife and ultimately his widow, played with some great insight and emotion by Sarah Moss and joined by the soulful voice of Caroline Ellena Vincent as Gloria Jones latterly his partner and mother of his only child, son Rolan (also unfortunately driving the car in which he died).
Really great piece of acting from Rhiannon Worth as Bolan’s mother, Phyllis Feld and Kristina Lao completes a nice little cameo as Helen Shapiro amongst other roles,
Derek Hagen is an imposing Tony Visconti and Matthew Ashcroft provides a characterful performance as band member Mickey Finn (and that really was his name). Much of this show is about the music and as such it seems only right to mention the musicians assuming roles as the band members of T-Rex, Michael Kantola, Ben Cullingworth and Alex Meadows.
Marc Bolan was constantly suggesting he wouldn’t live long enough to achieve everything he wanted to and so it came to pass, we can only imagine what he might have gone on to do had he not got into that car on that night in September 1977. 20th Century Boy is both educational and entertaining so if you get a chance it’s one of those shows everybody should see at least once, it tours until 30th June 2018.
