Half a Sixpence (Willenhall Musical Theatre Company)

In the words of the song ‘if I had money to burn’ I’d probably spend a portion of it on more tickets to see this classic interpretation of ‘Half a Sixpence’ regenerated by Warner Brown with words and music by David Heneker but, with as much stage appeal as ever.

Enhanced further by some stunning choreography from Lindsey Grant, exemplary direction from Alf Rai and feelgood musicality from Dan Tomkinson this is a show that can’t fail to please any audience due to a touching storyline, catchy musical numbers and a cast that quite obviously are enjoying every minute of the experience.

Will Phipps is probably as close to the real Arthur Kipps as I have ever seen and has talent in abundance be it acting, singing or dancing, the on stage relationship between Will and Abbie Rai as Ann Pornick (another sublime voice to listen to) is completely natural as if they had known each other for years.

Bring on the boys, James Totney (Sid), Matt Wirtz (Pearce) and Simon Williams (Buggins), partner them with the girls Beth Coleman (Kate), Samantha King (Victoria) and Rachel Coleman (Flo) and you have a supporting team that deliver some outstanding moves and vocals to complement the lead performers.

There's a little gem of a performance from Kelly Ashman as the 'almost' bride of Kipps, the far more classy Helen Walsingham, I wonder if there is a different local accent hiding under the covers of some formidable characterisation.

Roger Stokes's Chitterlow oozes comic timing and warmth in contrast to Nikki Rai as Mrs Walsingham, Paul Roberts as Shalford and Craig Griffiths as Young Walsingham who all provide that dislikable streak for different reasons and through an array of stage experience (believe me it is difficult to suggest such traits without taking a performance beyond the believable, keeping it credible is an art).

It would be churlish not to mention the extensive supporting cast who make this production the bountiful experience it is and for all of the aforementioned reasons I recommend you obtain a ticket if you can for the remaining performances through to 21st April 2018 when the run sadly ends.
